From 1969 to 1989 the "Kulturpark Plänterwald" was the only permanent amusement park of the GDR. In contrast to many western parks the appearance of this pleasure ground was rather plain and frugal.

A major part of the compound was an asphalt covering that was filled with permanently installed common and well-known fun rides. In addition, the park also consisted of green corridors and fixated functional buildings that were mainly used for restaurants or lavatories. The greatest attraction of the park was the 45 meter high Ferris wheel which furthermore served as a landmark for the surrounding area. However, it has been replaced in its function by the "Treptowers" which are office towers built by the insurance company Allianz in 1998.
